Zwischenzeitlich hat auch die “Atlantic Sun”, das Schiff auf dem unser Wohnmobil die letzten drei Wochen verbracht hat, den Hafen von Baltimore erreicht. Am 13. Juni lief das Schiff in Hamburg mit zwei Tagen Verspätung aus und am 2. Juli kam es mit 4 Tagen Verspätung in Baltimore an. Entladen wurde das Fahrzeug am 3. Juli. Was noch fehlt ist die Zollfreigabe. Kurt, unser Helfer für die Formalitäten am Hafen, ist aber zuversichtlich. Er holt uns um 8 Uhr morgens in unserem Hotel in Washington D.C. ab und gemeinsam fahren wir nach Baltimore. Bei der Spedition am Hafengelände angekommen schwindet die Zuversicht und plötzlich ist es sogar unklar, ob überhaupt jemand an diesem Brückentag beim Zoll arbeitet.
Wir sollen etwas später nochmal nachfragen und überbrücken die Zeit mit einem leckeren Frühstück im historischen Hafenviertel von Baltimore. Wir lauschen den Geschichten von Kurt, der 1962 von Deutschland nach Amerika ausgewandert ist und seit seiner Pensionierung als Stadtführer in Washington D.C. arbeitet. Wie vereinbart ruft er nach dem Frühstück nochmal bei der Spedition an und zum Glück sind die Zollpapiere mittlerweile eingetroffen. Wir freuen uns, dass unser „Ferienhaus“ am Stück und mit dem kompletten Inhalt angekommen ist. Nun heißt es „on the road again“!
In the meantime, the “Atlantic Sun”, the vessel on which our RV has spent the last three weeks, has reached the port of Baltimore. On June 13th, the vessel left Hamburg two days late, and on July 2nd it arrived in Baltimore four days late. The vehicle was unloaded on July 3rd. What is still missing is the customs clearance. Kurt helped us with the formalities at the harbor. He is confident that we get the van today. He picks us up at 8 a.m. at our hotel in Washington D.C. and drives us to Baltimore. Arriving at the harbor, the confidence disappeared and suddenly it is even unclear whether anyone works at the customs office on this friday (after the public holiday). We agreed that we’ll ask again later and had a delicious breakfast in Baltimore’s historic waterfront district. We listen to Kurt’s stories, who emigrated from Germany to America in 1962, and works now as a tour guide in Washington D.C.. After the breakfast Kurt calls the shipping company and fortunately, the customs documents have arrived in the meantime. We are glad that our van arrived in one piece and nothing is missing. Now we are “on the road again”!
